Word Lense is one of the coolest apps in the iTunes store. The app takes an image stream from the iPhone's camera, applies real-time image processing and pattern recognition tricks to it, and it then "plays" with any text it finds in the scene before displaying it on the iPhone's screen. The PLAY part is the interesting bit. The app developer, Quest Visual, calls it a "real time translating app" and begs you to "turn your iPhone into the dictionary of the future--now!" The app comes with a toy option that lets you reverse words it recognizes in the scene, or delete them altogether.

A Facebook intern interested in seeing how political borders affect friendships around the globe has created a map of the world by sampling data from the social network's 500 million user base.  This unique visualization of facebook's data is rather telling.  The map displays friendships as lights on a deep blue background. The eastern half of the United States and Europe shine the brightest, while China, Russia and central Africa, where Facebook has little presence, are mainly dark.

Despite it's new design twitter's numbers in the US seem to have fallen this past year. Pew released a study that shows only 8% of Americans online use Twitter – this was far lower than the 24% figure shared at the end of last year. The research also indicated that Twitter is skewed towards a younger and urban demographic.  It is used by 11% of people in urban areas, and is used by 14% of 18-29 year olds compared with 7% of those aged 30-49. Interestingly, Women are also more likely to tweet, with 10 percent using Twitter versus 7% of men.  Twitter also is proving to be 2x more popular popular among African Americans and Hispanics as it is with whites.

The Gap brand may have just figured this social thing out.  After the social brand debacle of the year, it is trying it's hand at location based social media.  The Gap’s latest move has been to incorporate an “Add To Foursquare” button to its latest online campaign.  Similar to a ‘like’ button for Facebook, this allows instant sharing to its customers’ friends, with the added benefit of adding a location. In return for the check-in the customer is given a 30% discount as a reward plus a $1 donation to charity.

Southwest Airlines has partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation have launched a big cause-related campaign using location-based services.  Southwest Airlines will donate $1 in the form of a free travel credit (up to the value of $300,000) for each mobile check-in via Foursquare or Facebook Places when customers get to the airport.

Jigsaw a creative group based out of Milwaukee came up with an heart-warming interactive exhibit at St. Vincents Regional Cancer Center at St. Mary’s Hospital where 7,000 guests could engage with a 45′ X 7′ rear-projecting interactive wall. Guests could walk by the wall, engage with hundreds of hand written messages drifting around the color changing field. Guests could then us a stylus to write a message of hope on a kiosk which would be re-written on the wall. This wall was a living, breathing organism. Some of the messages would read “Hope is a smile on a child’s face,” “Hope is another year with my mom”, “Hope is my family”. This exhibit blurs the line between a creative campaign and makes an emotional connection with each member that views it, breathes it or lives in the space it is in.

The messages submitted are displayed in their original handwriting on an experiential site. The “Hope Is___” site [@ http://www.stateofthearthope.com/hopeis/] invites people to share their message of hope with the community and read other inspirational messages.

The mobile age of cameras' on your phone has taken the point & shoot market for cameras by storm. Polaroid is attempting to reclaim it's glory with a new app. All you have to do is take, shake and share.

This 1.99 app is not too different from the millions of free camera apps that have emerged over the years. Would you buy this app?
